Do you believe the advertised purpose of things are actually always what they do?

Engineered obsolescence: Sometimes items are created to intentionally fail after a certain period of time to get you to buy more. Do you believe that some items may not do what is advertised at all , but the opposite in order to sell other products or services within the same industry. Can you think of any personal experiences or experiences in our culture past, present, or future that demonstrate this.
